Leesburg Dentist Has Nutritional Guidelines for Oral Health

November 17, 2015

Leesburg dentistThese days, pretty much everyone knows what foods are good for the body. Whether we eat them or not, we’re aware that fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and low-fat dairy products keep us feeling energetic and looking our best. But what about when it comes to keeping your mouth healthy? There are some nutritional guidelines to keep in mind at the grocery store and in front of the pantry for optimal oral health, too. Your Leesburg dentist, Dr. David S. Groy, is here to help advise you on the best foods to eat for a strong, healthy smile.

What You Eat (And Don’t Eat) Affects Your Oral Health

In general, what’s good for your overall health is also good for your oral health. That’s because the body is a complex machine in which each part is dependent on the function of another. You can keep your machine running smoothly by preventing tooth decay and other mouth infections with these nutritional guidelines.

Go Easy on the Sugar

It’s no surprise that sugar is the number one enemy of healthy teeth. Tooth decay occurs when the sweet substance comes into contact with plaque that’s on your teeth — it then turns into acid and attacks tooth enamel.  Of course, some common sources of sugar are soft drinks, candy and other sweets. But you could be getting a sugar overload from other sources without realizing it. Watch out for fruit juices, cereals and those special coffee drinks, too.  Still, sugar is hard to avoid — especially if you’ve got a sweet tooth. Protect your teeth from decay by rinsing the mouth out with water after indulging in your favorite treats.

Eat a Variety of Healthy Foods

Just like with your overall health, eating many different types of wholesome foods is crucial for your oral health, too. The vitamins and minerals found in fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy sources all contribute to healthy teeth and gums. They also help to guard your mouth against infection, like gum disease. Click here for more on what constitutes a healthy diet.

Hydrate With Water

Because saliva washes away the bacteria and leftover food particles that cause tooth decay and infection, a healthy mouth is also a hydrated mouth. Water is the absolute best thing you can drink to make sure your mouth is producing enough saliva to rinse your teeth clean.

If you need help remembering to drink water throughout the day, toss a reusable bottle into your bag or keep one on your desk at work — it’ll be a good reminder to sip for your oral health.

Combine A Good Diet With Excellent Hygiene Habits

Healthy teeth require a multi-step approach. For top oral health, make sure you’re eating well and maintaining good habits at home: brushing teeth for two minutes, twice a day, flossing once a day and visiting your dentist every six months.
