Have you decided to pursue All-on-4 in order to reclaim a complete smile? If so, you’ll need to have four sturdy implant posts surgically inserted into specific parts of your jawbone. But what will happen after the surgery? And what can you do to make sure that everything goes as planned? Below is a brief overview of what you can typically expect while you’re recovering from your All-on-4 procedure.
How Long Will the Healing Process Take After All-on-4?
The initial recovery process after All-on-4 usually takes about two weeks, and many patients are able to return to their normal routine within the first week. However, the timeline for the overall healing process is much longer. Your dental implants will need to form a lasting bond with your jawbone via osseointegration; this natural process can take as long as three to six months. To keep your healing on track, you should carefully follow any post-op instructions that your dentist gives you.
What Side Effects Can You Expect After All-on-4?
In the days following your All-on-4 surgery, there’s likely to be some discomfort. On top of that, you may notice swelling and bruising. These symptoms usually peak within two or three days. After that, they should start to gradually subside.
You can keep your discomfort under control by taking over-the-counter pain medication. Furthermore, holding an ice pack over the affected area can be a great way to keep swelling down. If you’re having trouble managing your side effects, be sure to call your dentist.
What Can You Eat After Your All-on-4 Surgery?
During the initial stages of your All-on-4 recovery, you should initially plan on maintaining an all-liquid diet. Yogurt, milk, vegetable broth, and meal replacement shakes can all be excellent options during this period.
After the first two weeks, you’ll be able to start incorporating soft foods like ripe bananas, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs into your diet. You’ll need to stick to a soft food diet for at least three months in order to avoid exposing your implant posts to unnecessary pressure while they’re bonding with the jawbone.
What Does Oral Hygiene Look Like After All-on-4 Surgery?
In order to minimize the risk of complications happening after your All-on-4 surgery, you need to maintain good oral hygiene. After the first 24 hours, you should start rinsing with salt water about two or three times a day. It’s also important to brush at least two times a day; be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush as well as nonabrasive toothpaste.
As long as you follow your dentist’s instructions, you should be able to look forward to a successful recovery process after the All-on-4 procedure. And once the implant posts have finished fusing in the jaw and the final prosthesis has been attached, you’ll be able to start enjoying your newly rebuilt smile to the fullest!
